I don’t wear these shoes as SPD, but as flats. They are comfortable, fit nice and snug. If you want to wear slightly thicker socks, I would suggest buying a size up. I struggle with the lace up mech to loosen and getting the inner tongue in the right position at times, this then digs into my ankle; but even then I don’t feel it when riding. They are waterproof but like everything there is a downside, if you get your lower leg wet, therefore the part of your sock not in the shoe, then the rest of your sock gets wet. I have noticed my socks have had damp patches at times, so I don’t think the breathability Is perfect. But not that bad to condemn it. Probably about 99%
