What is a full-face helmet?

Full-face helmets are sometimes also referred to as full-visor helmets. They are motorcycle helmets that cover the entire head, including the chin. Thanks to this design, they ensure extensive coverage and protect the entire head.

Full-face helmets are also fitted with comfortable padding on the inside and a large visor as standard. The latter provides the rider with a wide field of view and also provides protection against rain, wind and insects.

Typical features of full-face helmets

Comfort and design

Full-face helmets are available in a wide range of colors and designs. The product range includes classic black helmets, helmets with colorful patterns and even designs that are inspired by video games and comics. With such an extensive selection to choose from, every rider is sure to find the right helmet for their needs. When it comes to comfort and design, our full-face helmets also offer the following impressive features:
  • Aerodynamic helmet shape: Most full-face helmets come in an aerodynamic shape. This reduces air resistance, which offers a range of benefits. One of these benefits is that full-face helmets tend to be quieter than other types of helmets. An additional spoiler can also prevent helmet lift at high speeds.
  • Innovative ventilation: Since full-face helmets completely enclose the rider’s head, they need to have a sophisticated ventilation system. A ventilation system makes it easier for the rider to breathe, helps to maintain comfortable temperatures in the helmet and prevents the visor from fogging up.
  • Comfortable padding: Many manufacturers use quick-drying, hypoallergenic textiles for the helmet padding. The pads are removable for easy washing. Some models have cut-outs for the temples of eyeglasses. The quality of the padding is also an important factor in determining the helmet’s noise reduction performance.
  • Sun visor: A drop-down sun visor helps to improve visibility while driving in bright sunlight. Whether you are touring, cruising, road racing or off-road racing, an integral sun visor in your helmet is always a great feature to have.

Some helmets also offer integrated communication systems and practical mounts for action cameras and dash cams.

Safety features

The most important safety feature of a full-face helmet is the robust helmet shell. Many manufacturers test their helmets in their own laboratories to assess the impact performance of the helmets in the event of a collision. Tip: Look out for the ECE (Europe) and DOT (USA) safety marks. As overarching, strict safety standards, they provide an excellent point of orientation when buying a helmet. You can usually find the mark on a sticker on the back of the helmet and on the label on the chin strap.

In addition to the robust shell, some full-face helmets also have additional features that increase rider safety, including:

  • PinLock visor: Many helmet visors fog up after being worn for a while. However, good visibility is crucial for safety when riding a motorcycle. PinLock visors provide a reliable and long-term solution to fogging.
  • Emergency release system to remove the helmet: Some full-face motorcycle helmets have an emergency release system, which allows the cheek pads to be removed. This allows first responders to more easily remove the helmet after a crash without having to apply too much pressure to the rider’s head and neck.

How to find the right helmet size

Whether you are looking for a full-face helmet for men, women or kids, the most important factor when buying a helmet is making sure that it fits perfectly. To find the right fit, you first need to work out your helmet shell size. To do this, you must measure your head circumference. Wrap a flexible tape measure around the circumference of your head roughly one centimeter above your eyebrows. The tape measure should fit snugly but should not cut into the skin. You can now compare your head circumference with the size tables from the relevant manufacturer.

In our store, you can find full-face helmets in helmet sizes from 4XS to 4XL or 53 to 68.  Since there are no standard sizes, each motorcycle helmet fits slightly differently depending on the manufacturer and the model. When it comes to the fit of a full-face helmet, it is particularly important to ensure that the helmet doesn’t fit too loosely. How to make sure your helmet fits well:
  • You have two finger widths of space between your chin and the chin section of the helmet. This is so that impact energy is not directly transferred to your jaw.
  • You cannot feel any pressure on your temples. Otherwise, you will eventually end up getting a headache.
  • The cheek pads should fit very snugly without causing excessive cheek pressure. You should still be able to chew a piece of chewing gum.
  • If you have your helmet on and try to pull it off your head from the back, you should not be able to pull it off too far. As soon as your chin touches the chin guard, the helmet must not move any further.
Tip: Try on a range of different sizes, from loose-fitting helmets to smaller sizes. This will give you a better feel for the optimal fit.

Good to know: Manufacturers usually only make motorcycle helmets in 2 to 3 helmet shell sizes. The helmet size is then adjusted using the polystyrene liner and by changing the thickness of the padding. For example, if the helmets from a manufacturer in size XL and XXL have the same helmet shell size, then the helmet in XXL usually has slightly thinner padding.

FAQ about full-face helmets

Can I use a full-face helmet if I wear eyeglasses?

Firstly, yes, it is possible to use a full-face helmet if you wear eyeglasses. Many motorcycle helmets have cut-outs for the temples of eyeglasses in the helmet liner. These are commonly referred to as eyeglass channels. If you want to wear glasses under your full-face helmet, then you should keep the following in mind:

Choose a pair of glasses with lenses that are as big as possible and resistant to scratches and with temples that do not restrict your field of vision. Make sure that the frames are both robust and flexible. When buying a helmet, you should also make sure that the helmet provides a good seal. If the helmet does not provide a good seal, this can result in air turbulence under your glasses, which can have a negative impact on your riding experience.

Alternatively, you can also wear motorcycle sports glasses with prescription lenses under your full-face helmet. These glasses are equipped with an elastic band instead of standard glasses temples and are often more comfortable to wear under a helmet.

What is the difference between full-face helmets and flip-up helmets?

Both full-face helmets and flip-up helmets cover the rider’s entire head. However, on a flip-up helmet, the chin guard can be flipped up. When a flip-up helmet is open, it does not cover the chin area of the rider, unlike the full-face helmet. Much like jet helmets, this is a useful feature when taking a break for a drink, stopping to have a conversation or taking a breather at traffic lights.

What materials are full-face helmets made from?

The helmet shells of full-face helmets are usually made of thermoplastics, such as polycarbonate, or materials such as fiberglass or carbon fiber. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of weight, robustness and price.

For example, carbon fiber is frequently favored due to its strength and lightweight properties. Fiberglass shells also offer an impressive combination of low weight and outstanding impact resistance. However, the advantages of both materials also affect the price of the helmets.

Most full-face helmets are made of thermoplastic because polycarbonate is particularly well suited to mass production.  As a result, the price for thermoplastic helmets is slightly lower. The most important thing to keep in mind is that, just like carbon fiber and fiberglass, polycarbonate is incredibly robust. However, compared to these materials, it is not as resistant to UV radiation, for example, which means that it tends to break down quicker.

Finally, there are also helmets that are made from multiple materials. These helmets are referred to as composite helmets. The aim of the manufacturer when producing these helmets is to combine the various positive properties of the individual materials in one helmet.

How safe are full-face helmets?

Full-face helmets cover your entire head. They are also made of robust materials. This means that they can provide excellent protection in the event of a crash. When purchasing a helmet, look out for the ECE marking. This guarantees that the helmet has been produced in accordance with the highest safety standards. Since 2021, helmets have been certified according to the ECE 22.06 standard. However, helmets certified according to the ECE 22.05 are still permitted.
